BBC Radio Manchester to GMR and... back again

Greater Manchester got a BBC local radio station as we know it back on 10th September 1970.

Greater Manchester is a huge metropolitan area, and to reflect this, the station name changed to the more punchy BBC GMR in 1988. The station provides a service to over 3.5m people across the Greater Manchester area, reaching outwards through Salford and into the more rural areas of the Peak District and Cheshire. It employs over 30 full-time staff, and 40 groups who contribute to the output. Unsurprisingly, with the sheer size of its geographical coverage, it is one of the UK's largest BBC Local Radio stations.

In its time, as with a lot of BBC Local Radio stations, there have been some very prominent news stories covered, some of which have won awards; coverage of the IRA bombing at Warrington led to a Sony Award, plus the station was also there to cover the Manchester air-crash and the Woolworths fire.

The station began life as Radio Manchester, it tried to 'groovy' itself in the 90s and became BBC GMR (Greater Manchester Radio) and renamed itself Radio Manchester again on 3rd April 2006.
